Lord Owen addresses South Wales Branch

At a lunch in Cardiff City Stadium on 14 October, 140 members of the South Wales branch heard Lord David Owen speak about his latest book on Russia: Riddle, Mystery and Enigma. It is difficult to imagine a more relevant topic at this point in history and Lord Owen was very generous with his time as he agreed to a Q&A session with the audience after his presentation. He also found time for a discussion with several students from Cardiff Sixth Form College who were guests of the branch.

Lord Owen’s breadth of knowledge and experience combined with his remarkable command of detail made for a fascinating talk which provided fresh insights into possibly the most dangerous moment in international affairs since the Cuban missile crisis.

Lord Owen also spoke about his family connections with South Wales and the importance of having spent time with his grandfather who was a key figure in his early education. It was also interesting to hear of the role of the ESU in his life for it was at an ESU event in 1960s New York where he met his wife, literary agent Deborah Schabert.
