Dartmouth House and the English-Speaking Union

Bringing people together

Since 1926 Dartmouth House has been the home of the English-Speaking Union, functioning both as its headquarters and as a meeting place and clubhouse for its members, something it continues to do today. It also plays host to various educational events and the finals of many of our prestigious competitions, such as the Schools’ Mace and the International Public Speaking Competition, in which young people from over 50 countries around the world participate.

An architectural gem

A beautiful Grade II* listed Mayfair townhouse, Dartmouth House offers a lounge, wood-panelled bar and marble courtyard, and is open to members from 9am to 6pm Monday and Friday, and Tuesday- Thursday from 9am-9pm.

You can download a booklet about the history of Dartmouth House here.

Book your next event at the house

With its elegant interiors, sweeping marble staircase and original features, the house is the perfect setting for an event, be that a drinks reception or a dinner, a photo shoot or a wedding – in 2018 Dartmouth House won two awards for ‘Best Wedding Venue’. Over 30 per cent of all proceeds go to the English-Speaking Union’s education programmes, so by holding an event at Dartmouth House, you are helping to ensure that children have the speaking and listening skills they need to thrive in a changing world.

The house can accommodate groups from 10 people to 450 for a standing reception, and members receive a discount on hire charges. To find out more, see the Dartmouth House website.
