‘It Was a Different Time’

‘Boys will be boys’; ‘If you don’t want attention, cover up’; ‘It was a different time…’

As an equality activist, the question Gina Martin is most asked is, ‘how do you respond to…?’, followed by one of those phrases that leave us feeling frustrated or tongue-tied. In her book No Offence But, (just published in paperback) she tackles 20 of the most enduring conversation-stoppers, offering help and advice on how to transform them into productive discussions about social justice.

In this exclusive extract on our members’ hub, she shares her thoughts on what to say when someone proffers ‘It was a different time…’ as a way of justifying or excusing racism or misogyny. To find out more about becoming a member, click here.
