How to have better conversations

Scientific research has proven that social connection is as essential for our health and happiness as a balanced diet and regular exercise. Strong social networks can fuel creativity, enhance productivity and add years to our life span, while at the same time reducing our risk of stroke, heart disease, and Alzheimer’s.

And yet, many of us struggle to form strong and meaningful bonds – not because we’re unlikeable, but due to a series of psychological barriers that lead us to keep others at a distance, stopping us from fulfilling our social potential. In his new book, The Laws of Connection (Canongate), award-winning science journalist and author David Robson highlights these blocks and offers 13 evidence-based rules – from asking more questions to expressing appreciation – to overcome them.

On our ESU members’ hub, we’re delighted to share an exclusive excerpt in which David lets us in on a few easy conversational strategies that can help builds bonds, no matter what the other person’s views. Read the article here, or find out more on becoming a member here.
