The London Branch hosts a day of events at Dartmouth House.
Starting with the London Book Club (12pm), followed by a celebratory free afternoon tea (2pm) and the London Branch AGM (5.30pm). The day ends with a book talk by Francesca Peacock on ‘Pure Wit’ (6pm). We welcome members from all over the country as well as from London along with friends and family. Remember that attendance at any event in Dartmouth House allows you free access for the day and that food and drink is available to purchase. Tables can be booked here.
2-4pm Afternoon tea with the London Branch Committee
Join the London Branch Committee to celebrate the dedication of June Cowan, London Branch Committee member for more than 30 years. As Membership Officer, June’s service has been remarkable and long and we are very excited to welcome ESU friends old and new to thank her. Without volunteers like June the ESU would not be the force for respectful dialogue and lifelong friendship that it is. We are grateful for all that our London volunteers do to support the organisation.
This event is hosted by the London Branch and so tickets are FREE to you and a guest, but please register here for us to arrange refreshments and guarantee you a space.
5.30-6pm London Branch Annual General Meeting
Please register here to attend the London Branch AGM, where you will be able to vote for your representatives on the Committee, hear about the work of the London Branch throughout the past year and look forward with us to exciting plans for 2024.
For those unable to make it into Dartmouth House, this registration link allows you to sign up for a Zoom link to join us remotely.
If you are interested in standing for a committee position on the largest ESU membership branch or would like to find out more about how we make a difference to the lives of young people across London and represent London members, please email either Sarah Hawkins, Chair of London Branch, on esulondon-chair@esu.org or Miles Contreras-Brown, Secretary of London Branch, on esulondon-sec@esu.org.
We are a friendly and dedicated committee of all ages and backgrounds and would like to welcome you and hear your ideas and views at the AGM.

6-8pm ‘Pure Wit’: author talk by Francesca Peacock
Rounding off our day at Dartmouth House, Francesca Peacock will be discussing her biography of the First Duchess of Newcastle: ‘Pure Wit: The Revolutionary Life of Margaret Cavendish’. Born in 1623, Cavendish was one of the first English women to publish under her own name and one of the earliest female philosophers and scientists, writing about everything from the position of women to the nature of atoms. Margaret Cavendish may have been derided cruelly during her lifetime and have been neglected by history, but Francesca Peacock will be bringing her back into the spotlight at this presentation for the ESU. Please purchase tickets here.
Francesca is a writer and arts journalist based in London. She writes for ‘The Telegraph’, ‘The Times’, ‘The TLS’, ‘The Spectator’, ‘The FT’ and ‘Prospect’. ‘Pure Wit’ is her first book and is published by Head of Zeus. Copies will be available for purchase on the evening and there will be the opportunity for them to be signed by the author.
