SUMMARY:Devon & Exeter Branch: Lunch & Talk 'The Life\, Times and Legacy of Nancy\, Lady Astor'
DESCRIPTION:In 1919 Lady Nancy Astor was the first woman to take her seat in the House of Commons. She was MP for Plymouth until 1945. Born in the US in 1879\, in 1906 she married Lord (Waldorf) Astor\, the  owner of Clivedon. In parliament she supported social issues including the rights of women and the welfare of children. She became increasingly controversial\, for example supporting appeasement with Germany. Alexis Bowater began her journalistic career as a reporter for the Exeter Express & Echo. She moved into television to become a presenter and producer. Alexis has recently promoted a successful appeal to raise funds for a statue of Lady Astor on The Hoe.   \nApplication for places at speakers’ events should be made in writing to the Dining Secretary\, Mr. Philip Maunder\, Pennies\, 46 Pound Lane\, Topsham EX30NA with a separate cheque for each event\, made payable to ‘ESU Devon and Exeter’. Cheques will not be presented for payment until the day after the event. \n

SUMMARY:Devon & Exeter Branch: Dinner & Talk by Vic Marks 'The Broadcasting Phenomena that is Test Match Special'
DESCRIPTION:What is it about a radio programme that is about cricket but which  appeals as much to those who have no interest or knowledge of the game as its aficionados? As one critic said ‘If you want the best of the English and the best English\, there is nothing to beat Test Match Special. It is just such a joy to listen to.  There is something so quintessentially English and ‘summery’ about having TMS on in the background’.  \nWith his dry wit and scholarly demeanour\, Vic Marks has been part of the TMS team for many years. Vic played cricket for Oxford\, Somerset and England before becoming a journalist and author. He writes for The Guardian and The Observer. Vic will tell us something about his years behind the microphone and why it is that an apparently niche programme holds a fascination for such a wide range of listeners.

SUMMARY:Devon & Exeter Branch: Dinner & Talk 'Celestial Images: Saints and Sinners’ by Professor Michael Mendillo
DESCRIPTION:Devon & Exeter branch invite you to a dinner & talk on the subject of ‘Celestial Images: Saints and Sinners\, Intersections of Astronomy\, Art and Religion’ by Professor Michael Mendillo from Boston University\, Massachusetts. \nCelestial imagery of constellations spans human history\, from cave art to modern digital representations of the sky.  Images of astronomy and the art of religion merged in the 17th Century in an audacious re-branding of the sky that replaced the pagan villains of antiquity with biblical heroes. This richly illustrated talk will tell that story. It is an extraordinary privilege to welcome Michael Mendillo to the ESU. He is professor of Astronomy at Boston University and is recognised as being one of the world leaders in his field. He has advised many organisations including NASA and lectured worldwide. He has been described by one of his students as ‘one of the cutest\, funniest\, and sweetest profs around’.
