The silver thread – A talk by Elizabeth Gowing

The Silver Thread – 2nd August 2018

Today we welcomed back Elizabeth Gowing as our guest speaker; on this occasion for a talk entitled ‘The Silver Thread’.  Elizabeth is an expert on the Balkans, a gifted linguist and has written several books on this area.

She told us about hand-made silver costume jewellery and the people who produced it in Kosovo. Each item was meticulously assembled and would have taken skilled craftsmen many hours to achieve its spectacular appearance. If made in England, each piece would cost a small fortune. However, since Kosovo – a small country the size of Devon – is relatively poor, the jewellery is surprisingly cheap.

After her talk Elizabeth put on display her collection of Kosovan silver products to the delight of the ladies of the branch.  And so ended another excellent day. Hopefully our speaker will soon return.
