The Salisbury branch supports The Kings School, a boarding and day school for boys and girls situated in Tamil Nadu, South India. The school follows the state curriculum but does so using only English as the teaching medium. The branch raises money for the school from raffles held at its Christmas and Easter lunches.
The aim of Kings School is to deliver an excellent all round education in English to students from Kindergarten to Plus two. This education is focused on academic studies but includes sport, activities, skills training, community service and leadership with the sole objective of developing students to become successful and dynamic citizens of modern India and the changing world.
The school is currently closed during the continuing lockdown in Tamil Nadu province and all teaching is being conducted online. Many of the pupils are from destitute families and so the Salisbury branch has donated £2,000 for the purchasing of several much-needed computers and tablets for those young people studying at home. Colin Wagstaff OBE, Chairman Kings Schools & Kings World Trust for Children, thanked the ESU, stating that: ‘This is a really great benefit for these students who could not attend classes due to the lack of suitable devices. Please pass on our very grateful and sincere thanks to your ESU members from our newly “Zoom-empowered” Kings students and from Kings Management, for their very kind and practical donation’. The Salisbury branch, even in these difficult times, continues to seek opportunities to support the global purpose of the ESU by helping to endow young people with the speaking and listening skills and the cultural understanding they need to thrive.
